Lucknow: A transformative initiative aimed at empowering rural women is changing thousands of lives across Uttar Pradesh. The Prerna Canteen Scheme, launched under the leadership of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, has enabled more than 10,000 women to achieve ‘lakhpati’ status, marking a significant milestone in women-led economic empowerment in the state.
The initiative is primarily operated by women associated with Self-Help Groups (SHGs), who manage canteens set up in government institutions. Currently, over 2,100 Prerna Canteens are functioning across various districts of the state, providing hygienic and affordable meals while generating steady income for rural women.
Employment and Self-Reliance at the Grassroots
The scheme has emerged as a sustainable livelihood model by creating local employment opportunities for women in rural areas. By operating these canteens, SHG members are earning regular income and becoming financially independent, contributing to the strengthening of rural households and the broader local economy.
State officials say the initiative is part of a larger strategy to promote women’s entrepreneurship and economic participation. By connecting women with structured economic activities, the government aims to foster self-reliance and social empowerment in rural communities.
Canteens Operating in Government Offices and Hospitals
To ensure steady customer flow and operational stability, Prerna Canteens have been strategically established in government offices and healthcare institutions. Many of these canteens operate within District Magistrate offices, Chief Development Officer offices, and block-level administrative offices.
Additionally, the canteens serve employees, visitors, patients, and attendants by offering clean, nutritious, and affordable food. This dual benefit—accessible meals for the public and sustainable income for women—has helped the model gain rapid acceptance.
Expansion in Health Institutions
Following directives from Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, a special drive was launched to expand the initiative to healthcare facilities. As a result, 832 Prerna Canteens have been established in Primary Health Centres (PHCs) and Community Health Centres (CHCs) across the state.

These canteens have improved food availability for patients and their families, while simultaneously creating stable livelihood opportunities for rural women.
Rising Income and Improved Living Standards
Women operating the Prerna Canteens reportedly earn an average monthly income of ₹10,000 or more, enabling them to support their families and improve their standard of living. The consistent income has also enhanced their confidence and participation in community decision-making.
Experts believe that initiatives like these demonstrate the potential of self-help group-based entrepreneurship in transforming rural economies and strengthening women’s financial independence.
A Model for Women-Led Rural Development
The Uttar Pradesh government continues to provide training, financial assistance, and market access to women associated with SHGs. The Prerna Canteen scheme is now being viewed as a successful model of grassroots entrepreneurship, combining livelihood generation with social empowerment.
Policy experts say that if expanded further, the initiative could enable thousands more women to achieve financial independence, strengthening the rural economy and giving a new identity to women entrepreneurs across the state.
